Emmanuel Sanon, known throughout Haiti as Manno, was born in Port-au-Prince and is recognized as one of the most iconic footballers in the nation’s history. He played a central role in Haiti’s journey to the 1974 FIFA World Cup.
As a forward, he was a key part of Haiti’s attacking lineup during that historic campaign in West Germany.
The goal that traveled the world
In Haiti’s opening match against Italy, Sanon scored Haiti’s first-ever World Cup goal. The strike ended the world-record clean-sheet streak of Italian goalkeeper Dino Zoff, who at that point had gone 1,142 consecutive minutes without conceding a goal in international football.
The moment brought global attention to Haitian football and remains one of the most celebrated in the nation’s sporting history. Sanon was later featured in France Football magazine’s Les 100 Héros de la Coupe du Monde — the 100 Heroes of the World Cup.
